I had heard from cable people that they would wait for Full Duplex before upgrading speeds, so this is good news. Full Duplex - sending both upstream and down in the same spectrum - is an active project at CableLabs but likely 3-7 years from volume deployment. Comcast instead will use dedicated spectrum for upstream, possibly eight 6 MHz channels. AT&T is serious about adding 12M "gigabit" homes, using GPON and G.fast, and Comcast wants to be able to match the gigabits soon available to about 30% of the U.S.
Cable systems are about to get a massive capacity improvement with software defined CCAPs running on easily upgradable hardware. Harmonic has just entered the market with a software-defined unit running on a common, off-the-shelf Intel PC.
Since hardware can be upgraded very cheaply, it will be easy to support much higher data rates. Comcast is so supportive they have taken warrants in Harmonic and Tony Werner is in the press release.
Casa has similar plans. AT&T is a world leader in moving to SDN to reduce network costs. Cablers like Tony Werner see the same future and their vendors are getting the message. Competition in the U.S. is weak, usually only one or two decent broadband offerings. Our prices are 50%-100% higher than many in Europe. But weak competition is not the same as a monopoly, like Italy and much of Germany. Tens of millions in Italy and Germany will have some of Europe's worst broadband for at least another decade.
Larry Babbio of Verizon built FIOS because, "We have to get cable out of the home." Brian Roberts responded by pulling DOCSIS 3 forward by several years, to have a 100 megabit offering to match. With DOCSIS 3.1 in sight and ready to offer a gigabit, AT&T resumed investing and now is doing millions of lines of GPON. That can deliver a gigabit both downstream and up. Comcast in replying now with faster upstream as well.

COMCAST TO DELIVER GIG INTERNET OVER EXISTING NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE, CHICAGO AREA TRIAL BEGINS TODAY
Comcast launched the Chicago area trial of a new Internet service today that delivers speeds up to 1 Gigabit-per second (Gbps) to customers. The service will use DOCSIS 3.1 technology to deliver these speeds over the company’s existing network infrastructure.
"We’re delivering gigabit speeds over the network that already passes millions of homes in the Chicago area," said Comcast Greater Chicago Region senior vice president John Crowley. "Our commitment to providing customers with a great experience is front and center with this announcement, and we’re proud that Comcast’s Chicago area customers will be among the first in the world to have access to this new Gigabit technology."
The consumer introduction of DOCSIS 3.1 marks a major step forward in the evolution of ultra-high-speed broadband. Once DOCSIS 3.1 Gigabit Internet service is available in a market, customers with Gigabit-capable devices will be able to sign up for a new plan and then experience the benefits of that speed.
