The Tang Dynasty introduced woodblock printing and many of the first manuscripts. The Tang poets remain admired after a millennium. Datang has played a crucial role in wireless since developing the TD-SCDMA standard before 2007*. That was extended to 4G TD-LTE, which is the basis in turn for much of mid-band 5G. In fact, when the technology was developed for wireless in the 3.5 GHz band, it was called TD-LTE.

Datang was so important in wireless standards that only three weeks ago Qualcomm signed a major agreement with them (below.) They have thousands of patents; it is probably impossible to build a 5G network without using Datang patents. (Huawei and ZTE also have primary patents on advanced wireless.)

Datang is still known for test and measurement equipment, but at $3B sales/year was too small to compete.

Huawei spends $15B/year on research. ZTE spends $2B.  Ericsson and Nokia also spend $billions. 5G networks are so complicated there are over 3,000 essential patents in the standards. They require teams of thousands of engineers.

FiberHome is based inland in Wuhan. It's one of the largest optical manufacturers and claims many world firsts. Both are state-owned companies with some private ownership.

* TD wireless grew from a 1993 paper by Stanford Professor Arogyswami Paulraj and his student Guanghan Xu. Soon after, Paul invented MIMO, now the most important technology in "5G." Guanghan Xu went on to Navini Networks and then returned to China to work at Beijing Zinwei. Datang Mobile and Qualcomm Announce Collaboration on 3GPP-based 5G NR Interoperability Testing

Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated and Datang Mobile today announced collaboration on 5G NR Interoperability and Development Testing (IODT) in 3.5 GHz band based on 3GPP Release 15 specifications. The testing will utilize 3GPP 5G NR spec compliant base stations from Datang Mobile and user equipment (UE) from Qualcomm Technologies.

A 5G NR IODT is the foundation to enable the interoperability between the UE, radio access network and core network, and an essential step toward 5G commercialization and deployment at scale. The IODT between Qualcomm Technologies and Datang Mobile aims to accelerate the rollout of 5G NR commercial deployments in 2019.

On June 27th, 2018, as announced, FiberHome and Datang Telecom will be officially united and reorganized.

A new company namely China Information and Communication Technology Group will be set up accordingly, with FiberHome and Datang Telecom as its’ sub companies. The headquarter of the new company will be set up in Wuhan, previous FiberHome’s headquarter.
